This blog post is one of two that I will be writing. Our task is to write about two different topics that we are passionate about and expand on them and share. My first post will be all about the romance genre in reading and how that my be looked at in todays age.
This is a topic that I turn to a lot in my major when we have some freedom with the work/topics we choose to do. I always turn to this because this is the genre that I mainly read, as well as the fact that every time that I look into this topic I learn more things that I think will allow me to relate to myself as a romance reader and as well as my education at Susquehanna University.
Something that I thought about before I began to look into this topic is the very apparent stigma that surrounds the romance genre. It is assumed that you can’t be learning something if you’re reading a romance book, but those thoughts are only out in the universe because the majority of the readers and writers are women. From the information that I found through me exploring this topic, the stigma really creates more of a relationship between the romance authors and those that read and enjoy their books. I think that that statement alone says a lot about the romance genre and everyone associated with it.
This talk about the stigma brings up the fact that there is a lot of sexism in the publishing industry as a whole. The romance genre is a genre that really dominates the industry and that is a huge reason as to why it may be looked down upon compared to other genres that are not essentially female dominated.
I hope that my brief talk about this topic sparks some insperation for someone who is a romance reader like me to look into the romance genre and learn more about it. Me myself reading about this topic made me love it even more.
